Fabulous Monte Cristo Sandwiches

Monte Cristo Sandwich

Today, I had a really strong craving for a monte cristo sandwich.  If you’ve never had one, a monte cristo sandwich is a ham, turkey, and swiss sandwich, dipped in an egg batter, sometimes fried, sometimes grilled, and then topped with a sprinkle of powdered sugar and dipped in jam.  Sort of like a french toast sandwich.

The Blue Bayou in Disneyland makes a monte cristo that everyone raves about.  It’s dipped in batter and deep fried.  It’s too much for me.  I prefer the grilled version.

Aside from my mom, who made these when I was a kid, my friend Hannah makes the best grilled monte cristo I’ve ever had.  I searched this evening for a recipe that I thought would come close to Hannah’s sandwich– and this one really came through for me.  Delicious.

Here is the recipe (from allrecipes):

Ingredients

4 slices bread
2 teaspoons mayonnaise
2 teaspoons prepared mustard
4 slices cooked ham
4 slices cooked turkey meat
2 slices Swiss cheese
2 egg
1 cup milk

Directions:
1.Spread bread with mayonnaise and mustard. Alternate ham, Swiss and turkey slices on bread.

2.Beat egg and milk in a small bowl. Coat the sandwich with the egg and milk mixture. Heat a buttered griddle or skillet over medium heat, brown the sandwich on both sides. Serve hot.

  1. Thank you for the shout out! This version of the sandwich sounds good, although I don't use mayo or mustard. I also do these in triple layers. Try that next time and your almost there! 🙂
