Homemade (baked) Totino’s Pizza Rolls

True story: My husband loves, loves, loves Totino’s Pizza Rolls….

and I married him anyway.

I still remember my total disgust when we went on our first weekend away together at his parent’s vacation house.  We stopped at the grocery store on the way for some food to take with us, and he bought some.

Our relationship has survived his love of pizza rolls (he really does think they are the best thing EVER) and when I saw the recipe to make them homemade, in wonton wrappers and baked, I knew I would have to make them for him. I told him about them last week.  “I’m going to make these for you.” I said.  “That sounds glorious” he replied (or something to that effect… he probably didn’t really say ‘glorious.’

Tonight when I finished painstakingly wrapping cheesy peperoni pizza filling inside the wontons and presented them to him, all baked up and crispy, I prepared myself for the moment of truth.

He took his first bite…

His eyes rolled into the back of his head….

He said, and this time, I quote: “Oh.  My.  God.”

I waited…

“These are BETTER than Totinos Pizza Rolls.”

Well, duh.  If I do say so myself.  Of course, in my opinion, that isn’t saying much.  But these were really, really good.  The filling is fresh and cheesy, the wontons bake up perfectly crispy…. They really are a vast improvement on anything Totinos makes.

Now I have to make them all the time. 😉

Recipe adapted from Back to Her Roots

Ingredients

•1 tablespoon olive oil
•2 cloves garlic, minced
•1/2 cup of finely chopped peperoni
•1 small onion, diced fine
•2 cups marinara sauce
•1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
•Cooking spray
•1 package wonton wrappers (about 48 wraps)

Instructions

In a medium skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat until hot. Add in garlic, peperoni, and onion. Cook until onons are softened, about 6 minutes. Remove from heat.

Stir in marinara and mozzarella.

Preheat oven to 375°.

Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray (or line with parchment paper).

Put two wonton wrappers at a time onto a plate.  Spoon about 1 tablespoon of filling into the middle of each wrapper.

Using a finger dipped in water, run along the edges of each wrapper and then fold wrapper in half and press down to seal.

Continue until baking sheet is filled with pizza rolls (spaced about 1″ apart).

Spray tops with cooking spray and bake in preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until rolls are golden and crispy. Repeat process with remaining wraps and filling.

4.Let cool 5-10 minutes before serving (filling will be hot).

  1. Melinda- I would freeze them before baking. Stick them in the freezer on a baking sheet, and once they are frozen solid, put them in a freezer bag. Enjoy!
